After months of Biology comes a new "substitution". It was in term 3 that we were imminently surprised by the hardcore questions shrouded among Physic, a new subject which we were about to uncover truth of realities in the scientific way. I am a Science lover-I do not succumb in this subject.
I have always love Science for a major reason - To experiment, and make conjectures about it. It was how I found it fun. Today, we were at the Physics lab, readying ourselves with all sorts of equipments for our experiment - The Pendulum Bob. Of course, I was exhilarated, nothing is as lively as an experiment about Science, I thought. Coincidence to say, the Pendulum Bob looks like an anomaly object through first glance. Afterall, it was my first time handling a pendulum bob. As I held up the Pendulum Bob, I figured out the heaviness did not seem as it is from its exterior. True to the material, which was made of some kind of metal. We conducted an experient to find out the periods of the Pendulum Bob, which refers to how much time required to achieve one full oscillation, by going from left to right, then back to where it started from. We found out that length is one of the factors that determines the duration of the period. Afterwhich, we were assigned to complete the worksheet. There was one part of the question which rose the queries about the factors affecting the period of a Pendulum Bob. Interesting to say, researcg has shown that mass does not affect the accelaration of the Pendulum Bob, which caused some abnormalies stirred in my brain. It mentioned that if both objects of different mass were to fell of a building, they would land on the floor, yielding the same timing, excluding air resistance. This part of the question sparked a new interest for air resistance and gravity. I have yet to find out the true theories about these. But forming pontifications are part of what is Science to me. When I encounter mysterious questions, I will theorise myself an information. For example, I believe mass does not affect the falling speed of objects with different mass due to the constantly same gravitational pull on Earth that would thus disregard the existance of mass. Meaning, the gravitational force contributes both objects to the same accelaration, thus the equal timing. Science is all about curiosity, exploring and forming one's specifical opinions, before knowing the true facts. It is these factors that engrossed me into its "adventure" of the world, full of possibility. Embracing the Science for the entity of Fictions, it just adds on to more entertainments. ![]() a) Equipment List 1. Green Dye 2. Blue Dye 3.Pink Dye 4. A Carnation 5. An empty plastic bottle b) 1. Fill up half/a quarter of water into the plastic bottle. 2. Put the carnation into the bottle. 3. Download a stop motion app, like iMotion, to take time lapse photos. 4. Add a coloured dye into the bottle. 5. Use the stop motion app to take the picture of the carnation every 30 mins automatically after stabling the phone at a safe position. c) Photos of the carnation are shown below. ![]() d) Observation: The carnation never change in colour as it could not absorb water colour because pf it not having edible components. e) Difficulties faced: I tried with two colours, both with water colour, but the carnation won't seem to absorb any colour at all. This made me stressful. f) Improvements: Use a flower with a thicker stem so it could be seperated to each absorb a different colour in one go. Use food colouring instead of water colour. 7/4/2014 - It's Monday, the first day of school, and we got scolded by Mr Dinesh for reporting to the Science Lab late. What a "great" day to start with... :( We scurried into the lab quickly(After the scolding, obviously) . We started our second experiment on Chapter 5 "Seperation of Mixtures". The tittle for this experiment is "Seperation the Dyes in Ink". We were given a piece of paper for reflection on 3 things I have learnt, 2 things I wanted to know more and 1 question I want to ask. ( Picture of my reflection above ) We were assigned to partner up with one person, so that in each group there's only 2 students. I partner up with Timothy Tham. We received colour marker from Ms Yeo. Timothy Tham dotted dots on the Paper Chromatography, with each dot different in colour. Next, we dipped it into water( Solvent ) . What happened was that the dots started to widened and lengthened up and a few dots got seperated into a few colours. Now we know that the some colours are formed by using other colours to combine together. After experiment, I took a few pictures of it and here it is \|/ ( Pictures of my experiment! ^^ ) 2/4/2014 Wednesday: The first lesson was Science. We went to the Science lab after the dismissal in Parade Square. Instead of Mr Oon, Ms Yeo took charge of his place, with Mr Oon at the side of the lab. Ms Yeo gone through with us about the Chapter 5: Seperation of Mixtures. After the briefing from Ms Yeo, we started on an experiment from Activity 1, called "Exploring Solutions and Suspension" . We took a lot of photos as we experiment and found out which substances are solute, solvent, solution or suspension. After the experiment. I learnt that some kinds of tablets can form many air bubbles, such example is the Alka Seltzer tablet, althought I have never heard of this tablet and I wish to know what it is for. I learnt that corn flour is considered suspension when I notice it became 2 layers/more than 1 layer, when I learnt that it is considered suspension from Chapter 5 core notes, where I have learnt that it means the substance is insoluble/cannot dissolve, I wondered how we were able to drink something that is not at all able to dissolve... If I have the the materials/substances, I hope that I can experiment on more types of these substances and find out if they are solute, solvent, solution or suspension, and what chemical reaction are produced and when combined, this will be really exciting! Today's Science lesson was at the classroom, many pupils do not know they should stay in the classroom, thus results a fight, with one person saying everyone should stay in class, another person saying everyone should go to Physic Lab and etc...A great disaster indeed...
Finally the rescuer came into the classroom with an assistant.(Mr Oon and Ms Yeo! ^_^) Everyone scurried back to seats, finally ending the "riots". Now comes the very good(bad news for some.) news, where everyone trembles in excitement , hoping to receive good result for the Science Test. Starting with pupils with highest point, I was surprised when my name was called , since I never expected to get this high marks for this test. Of course, I was overjoyed about it. Nevertheless, I know this is only the first test(CA1) and there's still many other examinations waiting along this Secondary school journey, so there's still alot to learning and revisions for preparations of the next tests. (I heard some of my primary school friends are going to start CA2 next week, that's really fast, I guess.) |
